In short
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques that get your brand cited and recommended by AI-powered answer engines such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. While SEO ranks you in Google’s blue links, GEO puts you inside the answer that AI generates for the user.
Why GEO has become important
Search behaviour has changed. More and more people no longer type a query and scroll through ten results: they ask an AI a question and get a concise answer that cites only a few sources. If your brand isn’t one of those sources, you simply don’t exist in that conversation.
Three points of context:
- Google shows AI Overviews at the top of a growing number of searches.
- Millions of people use ChatGPT and Perplexity as a search engine.
- AI cites only a few sources: the competition to be included is tougher, but the reward is greater, because you are the answer, not one link among many.
GEO vs SEO: the differences
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Ranking in search results | Being cited in AI answers |
| Where | Google, Bing (links) | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| Key signals | Backlinks, keywords, domain authority | Structure, verifiable data, entities, mentions |
| Winning format | An optimised page | Content that can be cited and summarised |
GEO doesn’t replace SEO: it works alongside it. AI engines often draw on the same well-ranked content, so a solid SEO foundation also helps GEO.
How to do GEO: the pillars
- A clear, citable structure: direct answers, lists, definitions and FAQs.
- Structured data (schema markup): it helps AI understand who you are and what you offer.
- Entity authority and consistency: consistent name, brand and information everywhere on the web (website, directories, profiles).
- Verifiable content: data, sources and statistics, because AI prefers reliable information.
- A presence where AI reads: mentions, reviews and third-party content.
Frequently asked questions
Does GEO only work for large companies? No. In fact, for SMEs that rank well in a niche it is easier to become the cited source than in huge, crowded markets.
How long does it take to see GEO results? As with SEO, it is medium-term work: the first signals appear within a few months, with gradual improvements.
Are GEO and AEO the same thing? They are very close terms. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emphasises answer engines; GEO emphasises generative engines. In practice they share the same goal: being the AI’s answer.
